Calling all Graphic Designers in Brunei

DesignersAllianceBrunei.jpg

If you’re a real Graphic Designer practising in Brunei, you know very well that we needed this long time ago. dAb or Designers Alliance Brunei is in its forming. The idea is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information relevant to graphic design and business opportunity, showcase talent and advice on design.

Its all about design... our main aim is to serve the best interests of both the graphic design and creative industry, the public and private sector in Brunei and to indirectly register all graphic designers who qualify either in experiences, skills or qualification or right to use the designation Professional Graphic Designer.

After meeting with few designers and few key people, we have notice that Designers themself will need to look into establishing their own portfolio and skills and take their work seriously!!!!

Promote and regulate standards of knowledge, skill and code of ethics for graphic designers here in Brunei and to establish what we constitutes as “fair play” amongst related industry.

Provide a unified voice for graphic design practitioners, managers and educators in all business industries.

Provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information relevant to graphic design and business opportunity.

Educate the public on the importance and benefits of graphic design in business and everyday life to enhance the profile of graphic design and creative industry.

Have an annual publication of related Design Industries in Brunei; fashion, publication, interior and anything else that matter.

In the meantime please write to

How cheap is bruneian art work? If everybody set a standard in quality and cost... not just to get the job but to get paid the right amount of quality work being done.... Everybody is going to charge cheaper and cheaper, until the cost of work out wager the cost of being paid by client...

Really glad to hear that Brunei has finally taken this huge step. Really can't wait for this to become official. Let me know where, when and how do i register. Really really looking forward to this.

(This one is FOR the artists out there, please pay attention.) Some will ask you to “submit work for consideration”. They may even be posing as some sort of “contest”. These are almost always scams. They will take the work submitted by many artists seeking to win the “contest”, or be “chosen” for the gig, and find what they like most. They will then usually have someone who works for them, or someone who works incredibly cheap because they have no originality or talent of their own, reproduce that same work, or even just make slight modifications to it, and claim it as their own. You will NOT be paid, you will NOT win the contest. The only people who win, here, are the underhanded folks who run these ads. This is speculative, or “spec”, work. It’s risky at best, and a complete scam at worst. I urge you to avoid it, completely. For more information on this subject, please visit www.no-spec.com.

So to artists/designers/illustrators looking for work, do everyone a favor, ESPECIALLY yourselves, and avoid people who do not intend to pay you. Whether they are “spec” gigs, or just some guy who wants a free mural on his living room walls. They need you. You do NOT need them.

And for those who are looking for someone to do work for free… please wake up and join the real world. The only thing you’re accomplishing is to insult those with the skills you need. Get a clue.

our idea is to gain support and alliances from every other related industry :: so we start with this... will discuss further on the 1st briefing ((| invitation will be send out to chosen members. and if you think you can contribute in ideas in any way please send request for invitation |));

three category of membership ((| open for discussion |))
1. associates :: all professional graphic designers
2. alliances :: related media, printers, presses, designers from other industry ie. interior, fashion etc
3. honorary :: sponsors, public etc

we will probably need to get representative from each category of members. ((| open for discussion |))

This association has my full support. It's time for the creative thinkers of Brunei and the design industry itself to shine.
It amazes me how companies all over the world allocate at least 30% of their revenue to marketing and advertising but here in Brunei, the closest thing to FREE is what they choose. In the end, they take something that lacks in design and creativity, looks rushed and doesn't actually "sell" the product or message. Obviously I'm in marketing and this is what I see...we NEED this.

Let me know when & where and i'm there...
